January 3rd 2009 seems like a very unusual day for the first day of racing in western pa., there are some valid reasons why it should not be.
Let me list a few it is cold between 18and 30 degrees ,there is snow ,the track will be muddy, who will come if anyone, pbobably not enough cars,if that isnt a big enough reason to not race then we have one of two choices,1 stay home 2 go and enjoythe day.
MercerRaceway Park under the ownership of Viki Emig is the place of my choice this day ,I arrived early and found the pits filling quickly my heart began to beat just a little faster ,my first request was to burn an exaust off of a car, then weld a door bar in another now a seat belt mount all this so they could race with all this done we moved to the drivers meeting.
Todd conducted the meeting with his usual skill then ask me to pray it was like we had been there without a break the guys were great and it sure made me happy God has allowed me to serve this part of his family.
Finding my spot at the fence on the back stretch with my brother and long time friend Don Anderson we watched expectantly as about 70 cars lined up to begin and then off they went to begin 150 laps of racing,to say anything less than we were enjoying the day would be just wrong.
The track was ideal and the crowd really got into it ,muddy track, cold weather laughter friendships being renewed it dosent get much better ,than this,no serious incidents and it was over all to soon,,I heard many times how much fun was being had.
The casualty rate of cars began to increase the track was drying out and the speeds were getting faster ,it looked like we could race sprint cars the track was getting so good, but that will have to wait a couple months I will be there will you?
Racers and race fans are some of the most devoted people I know and I am so greatful God has allowed me to be so involved in this sport I love so much I hope I never have to leave this sport and this racing family for any reason.
Matthew 25:15 is the parable of the talents for many years I sought talents I thought I needed and most of the time the one thing I accomplished was being frustrated now after 71 years I really know where I belong ,with my racing family at the race track serving them praying with them and for them caring about them and and having them care for me.
To say I am looking forward to race season 2009 would be a big understatment ,I am excited to be a part of this All American U.S.A. SPORT tough times good times just keep enjoying this sport.
Trusting Jesus
